Process Vs. Outcome

We’ve turned the corner into a new year and the spring season is quickly approaching. This is a popular time to make New Year’s resolutions but as we all know, many people fail to stick to their goals. Here is a quick and effective way we teach our athletes at Healthy Baller how to stay on the right track.

Create a more specific goal

It’s easy to lose motivation and focus if you don’t have a specific 🎯. While stating, “I want to get in better shape” or “I want to have better lacrosse stick handles” have good intentions, these examples are just too general. Instead, challenge yourself to get more specific by shifting to “I want to be able to beat my previous time on my team’s fitness test” or “I want to accurately hit a target 50 times with a dodge in my wall ball session”. Choose what fits your individual focus.

Focus on the Process versus the Outcome

Once you’ve created a more specific goal, the next step is to think about what it will take to reach that goal. We’ll continue with the examples above. Getting in great condition to beat a previous record on a fitness test will require consistent hard work. Let’s say it takes 4 days per week of conditioning for 4 weeks. For the wall ball example, we could say that spending 15 minutes in a daily focused wall ball session is a great way to work towards your goal. So, the focus has now shifted to setting up a weekly schedule that is considered the process required to help you reach your final destination. You’ve now created a road map.

Don’t break the chain!

Visuals are super helpful so use a calendar. Place it on the fridge where you can see it every day as an easy reminder. To beat that fitness test it was decided that 4 sessions per week for 4 weeks were needed. Wallball for 15 minutes every day for 4 weeks. Check it off the calendar once your task was completed and keep yourself accountable day to day and week to week.
